Waylon Jennings: When I first worked with Waylon, I was told this would be his first shoot sober in decades. Sounded like a party to me so I put him in a tuxedo and jeans. My wife Marsha cracked him up with jokes I won’t repeat here, but suffice it to say, we all had a grand time.

The photographs from just this one shoot became 2 album covers and used as countless publicity images.

He was a good man and we appreciated his friendship over the years.

Tony Clifton

Tony Clifton: Shot to promote the Jim Carrey biopic of Andy Kaufman ‘Man in the Moon.’

Mr. Clifton wanted to run a advertisement in Variety during ‘Women in Film’ week. The banner of the ad was to read, “Thanks for the Mammories.”

You had to be there…

The ad was not approved to run at the time and Mr. Clifton was extremely upset. Ultimately however, Clifton managed to place the add in a Variety issue honoring the then departing Chris Albrecht from HBO. Albrecht was the Hollywood executive who transformed HBO into a cable TV powerhouse and made sure ‘Comic Relief’ had a home at HBO, raising millions of dollars each year it aired for the homeless in America.

Mr. Clifton is still on the road today.

The Commodores: A Motown Funk/Soul Band that opened for the Jackson 5 for 2 years before putting out their own first album, the proceeded to become Motown’s best selling 70′s male group.

After going from 6 members to 3, over 30 years, they can still laugh and play up a storm, one fun live act.

Kids Play

Kids Play was shot for the cover of Guest Informant magazine, placed in hotel rooms all over the Santa Barbara area. The client liked the image so much, it ran for an additional 2 years. Never one to take credit where it isn’t due, my friend and assistant, Paul Meyer suggested we use his son Evan to be the boy model for the shoot, they both made this day at the beach come together nicely.

Sam Kinison

Sam Kinison: Sometimes a photographer just has to be ready for anything. In anticipation of Kinison’s rumored lack of reliability, the three ladies and the dog were shot on a white syc, and when Sam finally showed up 24 hours later, the two images were merged, long before the advent of Photoshop in 1985. Sam was a pleasure to work with, and I loved his truthful and honest humor, he lived a full but far to short a life.
